Bill Gates has confirmed in 2025 that he is still carrying a Samsung Galaxy Fold. In an interview reported by Android Headlines, he said the device was given to him by Samsung chairman Jay Y. Lee. He explained that he didn’t buy the phone himself. This follows the same pattern as past years when Samsung kept him supplied with the latest foldable.
His history with the Fold line is easy to trace. In 2022 he told readers on Reddit that he was using the Galaxy Z Fold 3. He liked that the larger screen meant he didn’t need a tablet. By early 2023 he had already switched to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. At that time Business Insider and SamMobile both reported that the phone came as a gift directly from Jay Y. Lee.
The choice makes sense for Gates. He often says he carries only two devices with him. A laptop and a foldable phone. The Samsung Fold gives him enough space for reading, email, writing, and now even AI tools.
Viewers saw this in the series What’s Next The Future with Bill Gates (Season 1, Episode 1 from 2024). About five minutes into the episode he is shown sitting on a sofa with the phone fully open in his hands.
A few seconds later there is a close-up of the screen. He is typing into ChatGPT and moving between multiple tabs on the wide inner display.
